Frequently Asked Questions:

1. So how is this different than other GIS training that I see on-line?

Using screen recording technology, we have created a two-day training class in Introduction to Manifold 6.0.  You can download the data, and 13 separate tutorial sessions. These are not static HTML pages you see in other GIS training products, but rather a video stream of our trainers guiding you through the actual steps for performing the tasks.

Also, our training focuses on a case base approach. Rather than introduce you to unrelated topics, all of the exercises focus on a single project, from data collection and creation to cartographic and Internet output. It will give you the feel of actually creating a real project from scratch.

2. Is it effective?

We are very pleased with the results of this training plan. In fact, the video training techniques are used to effectively guide students at a major US University in the use of the software. Preliminary finding of a study show that students learn the software faster, and also retain the information better using this method vs. traditional classroom/laboratory instruction. In fact, by allowing you to stop, rewind, and review more complicated parts of the video, you can work at your own pace. We believe this is even more effective than the often mind-numbing pace one often finds during a vendor training session.

3. Is it really 2 days?

Well, sort of.  Considering lunch and coffee breaks, most 2 day training classes offered by GIS vendors typically only cover around 10 - 11 hours of training.  Plus, you are often waiting for others to catch up (that's if you are one of the lucky ones who aren't lost). 

In this training course many of the exercises will require you to perform some work beyond the training video. For example, in the digitizing exercise, our trainers step you through how to digitize geographic features, normalize topology, and enter attributes for about 1/6 of the entire map. Our video trainer then "signs off", allowing you to work for another 45 minutes or so to complete the map.   In other cases, during long computational processes our video trainer also signs off, and asks to you resume the training when the process has finished running.  

In general, if you review the video, and start and stop to complete the tasks yourself, you can expect to spend almost two days working through the exercises. 

4. What if I don't want to go through all the exercises?

You don't need to go through all the exercises. For example, if you are pressed for time, and cannot complete the digitizing exercise, a completed drawing is available for you to use in other exercises.  Also, if you skip ahead to the cartography exercise, there are completed dataset that you can use.  Therefore, while the training is sequential, it is designed to allow you to start anywhere.   In fact, the time you save learning just one lesson (i.e. cartographic communication, IMS application, terrain mapping, etc.) will be worth the cost of the training software.

5. Do you include Manifold extensions?

No. There is just too much to cover with the basic Manifold system (version 6.0) to be able to cover the extensions such as Business Tools and Surface Tools. We anticipate other low-cost training solutions on the extension products in the future.

6. Why do you charge so little for the training?

Primarily because we can. We have virtually no overhead, or advertising costs. In fact, the largest expense, accounting for almost 30% of the sales is the e-commerce transaction (we have to use a third party for these tasks because we are too small of an operation to fulfill the orders ourselves).

7. Do you offer any money back guarantees?

No. Due to the low cost of the training software, we are unable to provide money-back guarantees, or accept returns.  However, you can visit the testimonial page to see what other people are saying about the training. 

8. Do you offer volume discounts?

Yes.  However, it is basically an honor system.  During checkout you will be able to purchase a multi-user license.  You will receive an email providing you with the right to use the software up to the number of users you selected.   Special pricing exists for University site licenses, and very large organizations (over 200 people).  Please contact sales{at}gisadvisor{dot}com to obtain pricing information. 

9.      So, will I be a Manifold expert when I'm done?

You will be able to work effectively with Manifold GIS.  And because the training uses a case based philosophy, your experience will be in a real-world project.  Becoming an expert in Manifold will take some time, but our training will allow you to be comfortable, and avoid going through a steep learning curve when trying to slug it out on your own - well worth the price if you ask us!

10.  I only have dial-up access, can I download the training?

The training videos, and data are 87MB, so it is not practical to download using a dialup.  However, our ecommerce provider can ship you the training on a CD for a small fee.  Simply check the box to receive the training on CD.
